Tandarei: The faraway town fat on UK benefit fraud

TWO months ago, a group of 10 bedraggled and bewildered-looking Romanians arrived at immigration control at Stansted airport in Essex on a flight from Bucharest.
They had no luggage, spoke no English and had no apparent means of support. One of the group was an alcoholic and another a drug addict.
An estimated £1 billion a year is defrauded from the benefits and tax credits system, with tens of millions of pounds lost to organised crime. While some fraud is inevitable, there is mounting concern about the high proportion of fraudulent claims orchestrated by traffickers which are being rubber-stamped after only the most basic checks.
Some of the suspects behind this fraud can be traced to Tandarei, a town of 15,000 people in eastern Romania which includes a 2,000-strong Roma gypsy population. Over the past five years, previously rundown neighbourhoods have inexplicably prospered.
The minor economic boom has seen 100 imposing new homes built, valued at about £20m. BMWs and Land Rovers with British numberplates cruise the dusty streets.
Vasile Sava, mayor of Tandarei, said last week: “How can I know where they get the money from? Nobody is telling us how they made the money abroad, legally or illegally.”
British police, who are said to have acquired several mug-shots of the affluent suspects in Tandarei, believe some of this new-found wealth is the proceeds of crime sent back from the UK, Spain and Italy using a variety of methods including Western Union and MoneyGram wire transfer services.

NYC hot dog vendor evicted over whopping rent bill

NEW YORK – Homeowners aren't the only ones in hot water over overpriced real estate. A New York City hot dog vendor has been evicted from his prize spot outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art because he couldn't pay a whopping rent bill of nearly $54,000 a month.
Snack cart owner Pasang Sherpa of Queens had a deal with the city's parks department that required him to pay almost $643,000 per year for the vending rights near the museum steps.
He says he was $310,000 behind on his payments when he was evicted.

Easy Jet

Saturday 19th April Chopin. 1st piano.

Watched people on box. Americans. One had eighteen private jets, amongst other things, including a wife and children, whom he had to rush to get to (They all took this stance) how far is it from the truth? A very long way… (they also had to “relax!!! ) One man, a football player, had a five million pound jet… also to rush to his “wife and children” !!!
Difficult not to look very closely at these creatures, my conclusions are quite obvious.
I remain, sanguine, alone, “relaxed”. I never rush to my wife, because she is always here and whatever I wished to do, I would not need my own jet… The local brothel is just up the road, a cab ride… if I were that way inclined, a fraction of a fraction of the price of a getaway jet to no where, I would not have to hide my penchant from her, she would indeed come and sort the lady for me… haggling the price, no doubt… A paragon ??
Clearly these people are inundated with money and have no other way of expressing themselves, simply flaunt that which they have, as the majority of haves, do, mixed with a large amount of vulgarity and greater amounts of sex, spending endless time and endless money, seriously attempting to hide this other side to their existence. I once knew a man whose whole life was taken up by the charade of hiding his so called “mistress” from his wife. ..So long as it makes him happy… He thought himself so very clever at all the endless tricks he played. Another idiot. The stress helped bring on the cancer which killed him.
Difficult to see also “where they are” what happens when they “momentarily” dare stop, think, they do have that capability…. Interesting.
“Cannery Row” “Clean Slate” “Wages of fear” creep into my head.
Interesting also for me, is at least these people (or some of them) shared my conclusion about closing aircraft, vehicle doors, how they liked the delicate , soft, click, as a Rolls Royce… about the only thing I could ever see my having in common with these creatures, likewise, I am just another maggot to them.
I have a jet which I usually share with about two hundred other people… is there so much difference? I do not have to fly it, accept any responsibility for it, my forte, which has left me precisely where I now am.
Those people who do hear of my antecedents, always screw up their faces when wives, children and grandchildren, are mentioned, mine, whom mostly I have never seen, other than during the initial crescendo… “How could you walk away?! So many!!“ they screech. “Easy” is always my reply. Invariably they walk away… “disgust” written on their mean, screwed up faces, reflecting their mean, screwed up minds. Never, ever, considering/asking my position, my point of view, as always , as ever, as I have always been, a none starter.

Oligarch pays for party that enraged Putin

A star-studded hotel opening has cost thousands of Moscow market traders their jobs. Shaun Walker explains why

(The Independent, Thursday, 16 July 2009)

Farhad, a 37-year-old migrant labourer from Tajikistan, has little in common with Russia's rich. Sporting an Adidas tracksuit, squatting with a beer on a bench outside the closed and shuttered Cherkizovsky market, he couldn't be further away from the flashy cars, luxury villas and private jets of Russia's oligarch class. But bizarrely, Farhad, along with about 100,000 traders who lost their jobs when the market in Moscow was closed down two weeks ago, may have been made unemployed as a result of the oligarchic party of parties: a tasteless show of wealth that apparently infuriated the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin.
Cherkizovsky was the biggest market in eastern Europe, a sprawling bazaar where crowds streamed to buy everything from electronics to clothes and carpets. An estimated 5,000 buses arrived at the market every day, filled with shuttle traders who would buy up cheap goods in bulk and take them back to smaller markets in towns and cities across European Russia.
Two weeks ago, the market was closed down by police in what appears to be an attack on the extravagant Azeri businessman Telman Ismailov, the market's owner. Mr Ismailov, famous for throwing some of the world's most lavish parties, opened a resort hotel in Turkey in May that reportedly cost about £1bn to build. The Mardan Palace, named after Mr Ismailov's late father, has 17 bars, 10 restaurants, a swimming pool so vast that it takes half an hour to cross by gondola, rooms decorated in over-the-top palatial opulence, and a beach made with 9,000 tonnes of artificial sand.

Kyrgystan's Sharp Turn Toward Moscow

Kyrgyzstan's announcement that it plans to close the U.S. air base in Manas changes the security playing field in Central Asia. Those opposed to the U.S. presence in Central Asia will view the base closure as one more victory in the attempt to stop Washington's quest for world domination. Those critical of Moscow will view the decision as an attempt to undermine the worldwide spread of democracy and Washington's struggle against international terrorism. But the true reason has more to do with Kyrgyzstan's internal politics than any foreign policy considerations. During his news conference in Moscow on Wednesday, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev expressed dissatisfaction with the rental terms for the air base. He also spoke about the misconduct of a U.S. serviceman, which was a source of tension with the local population.

Platell's People: Oh, you're so selfish, Madame Supermum
Last updated at 9:59 PM on 09th January 2009

At first glance, the pictures flashed across the world of French justice minister Rachida Dati returning to work less than five days after the birth of her first child represent a triumph for career women everywhere.
The outfit was so calculatingly chic, the heels so high they would tower over mere mortals.
Beautiful, successful, chic, beaming with happiness, Ms Dati looked every inch the role model for sophisticated high achievers.
Indeed, she was working from her hospital bed the day before, despite a Caesarean.
Supermum or super-selfish? For behind the perfectly coiffured glamour I fear there lies a more troubling trend of the marginalisation of men from family life and the institutionalisation of single motherhood by the state - not just in France but in many Western nations and particularly here in Britain.

French minister who returned to work five days after giving birth is 'SACKED' by Sarkozy

By Mail Foreign Service

The glamorous French justice minister who went back to work just five days after giving birth has been thrown out of office.
Rachida Dati became the country's most high-profile single mother by returning to her post so soon.
She famously refused to name the father of her daughter Zohra fuelling speculation that he may be a high-profile figure.
Conceivably, Sarkozy is the father, or, she refused to be one of his "personal trainers". For myself they are many interesting speculations - I'd like to be the French President when I'm born again.

The female personal trainer who helps President Sarkozy improve his sex life with supermodel wife

By Peter Allen, Daily Mail
Last updated at 5:30 PM on 21st January 2009

Judging by the stacked heels on his shoes, he will do whatever it takes to measure up to his model wife.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that Nicolas Sarkozy is also taking drastic steps to enhance their love life.
The French president, 53, has been huffing and puffing his way through exercises to improve his strength 'down there'.

He does the GBP 150 sessions a few times a week with personal trainer, Julie Imperiali, who he met through his wife Carla Bruni.
Mrs Imperiali, 26, has described in excruciating detail how the running and stretching exercises will help.
They apparently strengthen the perineal muscles in Mr Sarkozy's lower pelvis. 'Sexual relations are better if the male perineum is in good shape,' said Mrs Imperiali.
'The problems of premature ejaculation are often due to the perineum.'

Mistresses, or any variation in this respect, are an accepted part of any politician’s life. In most cases, their sex lives are slightly more interesting perhaps than their political ejaculations, when these secrets unfold, Sarkozy and his wife being surprisingly open about their “arrangement”.

Mr. Sarkozy, adding a typically French touch, by calling at least one of his mistresses a “personal trainer”! Trainer for sex? His wife, doubtlessly, could give him a few lessons. She, no doubt, rather busy with her own “personal trainers” To her credit she has reached the apex of the tree, proving the oldest profession is still supreme.

With regards to Mademoiselle Imperiali, I have to admit, I like Sarkozy’s choice, the one shown and I would also, doubtlessly, lose more than a couple of stone with her at a 150 pound a throw, a few times a week……

Possibly, Sarkozy will do a Peter Sellers on us, such is his incandescent interest in his “manhood” this would be most unfortunate, as his politics, although complete rubbish, his sex life is entertaining to the population as a whole, especially for the French, especially for myself.

I can't wait for baby No 11, says 'rampant rabbi'

By Claire Ellicott, Daily MailLast updated at 8:02 AM on 20th January 2009

Go forth and multiply, it says in the Old Testament. And Philip Sharp is not a man to question the word of the Lord. The self-proclaimed rabbi recently celebrated the birth of two more babies by two of his 'wives' and is already looking forward to another new arrival - baby number 11 - in September. At the last count Mr Sharp, whose bizarre living arrangements came to public attention two years ago, has ten children, seven wives and a mother-in-law to provide for.The 48-year-old claims God told him he was an Old Testament king and he should increase the size of his family to strengthen his religious faith. So he decided to create a harem of devoted wives.
Mr Sharp, who claims GBP 800 a month in child benefits, said the family struggled to make ends meet because his GBP 60,000-a-year haulage business was suffering in the recession.

Hoon hits out at 'hypocritical' Emma Thompson over Heathrow expansion plans

By Tamara Cohen, Daily Mail
Last updated at 3:18 PM on 17th January 2009

Transport secretary Geoff Hoon yesterday stuck the knife into the hypocrisy of celebrities who campaigned against the third runway at Heathrow.
The actress Emma Thompson joined a motley crew of green activists in buying a patch of land next to the proposed runway, which will see an entire village wiped off the map.
But the straight-talking minister suggested that double Oscar-winner Miss Thompson, who jets to America for her acting work, had to examine her own behaviour.

Surprised, more than surprised to see a MP of any leaning and any colour actually putting his head above the parapet.

Missionary sentenced to hard labour in hellhole prison 'had a child by Gambian man'

• Daughter they said was adopted 'was by her soldier lover'
• High Commissioner told him to stop strutting around in uniform
• Claims of heroic helicopter mission were nonsense
• £10,000 river cruiser took him on trips to convert Muslims
Extraordinary new revelations are set to further tarnish the reputations of two British lay preachers sentenced to hard labour for sedition in The Gambia, West Africa.
David and Fiona Fulton pleaded guilty to undermining the country and its president Yahya Jammeh by sending 69 emails to British Christians accusing the Muslim population of extremism and calling The Gambia 'a hellhole'. They were each fined £6,250 in addition to their one-year sentence.
But while evangelists worldwide last week sent messages of sympathy and began raising funds to pay their fine, The Mail on Sunday can reveal the full extent of the couple's bizarre life as missionaries and how they scandalised the Christian community in The Gambia.

Air ambulance sent to save unconscious rider is ordered off £9bn sheik's estate

A shit scared sheik, all part of our now multicultural ”establishment”
The racehorse-owning sheik, who is Crown Prince of Dubai and a friend of the Queen, has tight security at his £75million Longcross House estate.

A vast surveillance operation secures the 30 apartments and 90 acres of garden to protect the sheik’s children from kidnap. All family members have codenames and are accompanied by security guards with radios.

Any routes the family travel along are always checked out first and if they venture on to the common to ride, protection officers track their movements.

The sheik is fifth on Forbes magazine’s global ‘rich list’ with a £9billon fortune.

His head of security confirmed the helicopter had landed, saying: ‘It just plonked down outside the house, landing on private ground without permission, and that was the issue.

'Aircraft can’t just fly in like that. I understand it was an emergency, but they should have notified us. We have people working in the grounds, including gardeners, and if they have protective earphones on they can’t hear anything.
